Friday Creek

Friday Creek, the new, unknown canyon has now been discovered... this was a fantastic gorge, full of difficult class IV to V moves, with one catch... an absolutely hellacious portage 800 vertical feet up and out of the canyon at the last rapid(and unrunnable, unportagable drop... only unrunnable because there was a tree jammed in the only exit slot, this will change with the next high water session). The canyon walls are made of a really cool & smooth schist stone and the drops are mainly boulder garden style rapids, mixed in with a few decent sized ledges. There are a few seives that must be portaged. The top of the canyon is fun class II/III set in a perfect 30 ft. walled mini-gorge. Once the giant log jam comes into sight, the creek will not let up until the portage drop is reached, keeping you on your feet around every bend. Make sure the water is low before you go into this creek (mid-August at the earliest). Located 20 miles up the Knik River on the Old Glenn Highway (close to Knik Glacier). Reachable by ATV's or a bush plane only (the ATV trail goes directly to the water at the put-in!)

The take-out & the means of transportation to get there.

Xav in the mini-gorge above the seriousness.

The giant log jam (and the beginning of the seriousness).

Log jam drop.

The boulder garden I ran below log jam drop (run river-left through the boulders)

Xav on a random ledge half-way through the big gorge.
